CHAPTER 6

I was released from the hospital a few days later. A few friends of mine from NYU had come to visit me after they heard I was in the hospital. They said I could come and stay with them at their apartment in “The Village”. They had a spare bedroom and said I could stay there with them as long as I needed to. Most of the days I just sat and stared out the window and wondered how I was going to get my life back on track. I didn’t have a job or any money. The only thing I could do was go back to my old boss and beg for my job. That was all I had. My friends were really supportive of me.

After staying with them for two months, I finally got the courage to go to my old job. As soon as I walked in I saw my old boss, Jim. When she saw me, this look came over his face. Like he was really worried about me. Jim walked right over to me and gave me a big hug. I almost broke down right there because Jim was the closest thing I had ever had to a real father. “Come on! Let’s go into my office! I’ve been waiting on you to come and see me!” he said.

He had his arm around me as we walked back to his office. I sat down in the chair across from his desk while he sat at his desk.

“Honey…why didn’t you tell me you were in trouble? You know I would have helped you out. Was this the first time he hit you?” he asked. I looked down. I was ashamed to tell Jim how many times Derrick had hit me. Jim was old school Italian and there was no telling what he was going to do. “How many times?” he asked again. I looked up at him. “This was the second time!” I said. He sat back in his chair and was quiet for a minute.

“So what do you plan on doing?” he asked. “I was wondering if I could have my old job back. I’ve been staying with friends from school. But I don’t want to impose on them for too long!” I said. I was secretly praying that he would be able to give me my job back.

“Sure. It’s been waiting on you. I never filled that position after you left. I knew that something wasn’t quite right with that young man, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. You are more than welcome here!” he said. I smiled at him. I was so happy.

A week later I started back working at Spiaggia. I liked being out of my friend’s apartment. A month later I was able to move into my own little place. It wasn’t much, but it was mine. I couldn’t work and go to school so I took a leave of absence from school. I hated to do it but for right now, working was more important than anything.
